Backwoods Bluegrass - warm-up entertainment.The group was well-received by the audience.Master of Ceremonies, Dave Portman.Dr. Hendley D. Hoge, beginning his 35th year as conductor of the Mercer Community Band."The Star Spangled Banner" - colors presented by Mercer Boy Scout Troop #83.The band opened the concert with "This Could Be the Start of Something Big", written by Steve AllenThe Mercer Community Band is made up of many veteran musicians.Nolan Petote, clarinet soloist.Mr. Petote's first selection was, "Adagio and Tarentella".Mr. Petote also presented "Concerto for Clarinet".Mr. Petote's talent was well appreciated by the audience.Brianna Kolbert, twirler from Hickory High School, showed her talent to the "Washington Post March".Doug Butchy, Assitant Director, took the podium for "Themes Like Old Times".Mr. Butchy has been involved with the band for 20 years.Mr. Butchy currently serves as Director of Bands at Shenango High School.Ice Cream Social hosted by the Mercer Area Girl Scouts.A large crowd was on hand for the great weather and even greated music.John Stumpff, Student Assistant Director, led the "Totem Pole March".Mr. Stumpff, a music education major at Westminster College, is an eight year member of the band.Vocal soloist, Jodi Miklas, entertained with an outstanding performance of George Gershwin songs.The audience enjoyed Ms. Miklas' rendition of "I've Made My Plans for the Summer"."As Time Goes By" was an audience favorite.Ms. Miklas led the audience in the singing of "Around the World in Eighty Days".The saxaphone section was featured during "In the Mood".The evening's performance came to an end with Sousa's "Semper Fidelis".
